ADA - Ada capitalized on a porous Perry defense with aggressive baserunning and opportunistic hitting to shut out the visiting Commodores 10-0 in a run-rule shortened contest Wednesday evening.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-0 by winning their home opener easily, while Perry fell to 0-2.
Junior pitcher Alexis Amburgey tossed a five-inning shutout, giving up just three hits and no walks or runs to earn her second win in three days.
"Alexis did a nice job spotting the ball," said second-year Ada head coach Ken Jochims. "She moved it around well.
"We put the ball in play and our effort was good. We have been solid defensively and real aggressive going after the ball."
The improved Bulldog defense played error-less softball.
After a Perry double in the top of the first went for naught,
Ada jumped ahead in the bottom of the first.
Leadoff batter Ashley Sumner walked, stole a base and moved to third on a passed ball. She then scored on an RBI double by right fielder Megan Simon to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Amburgey retired seven in a row into the home half of the third.
Simon reached on a one-out error by the Perry shortstop to start a rally. She then sped around to score on a throwing error by the third baseman after she fielded an Amburgey grounder.
Following a high fly out to left field, Amburgey stole second. She scored standing up when Kaylee Spangler stroked a solid run-scoring single to center field. Alexis Gonzaga hammered a liner through the second baseman, but a force-out kept the margin at 3-0, Bulldogs.
In the top of the fourth, Amburgey struck out the leadoff batter looking, then pitched around a single to center field. A force-out grounder from second sacker Tessa Coulson to shortstop Quinn High ended the threat.
Ada broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth as a missed pop-up to third base opened the floodgates. After a strikeout, Simon drilled a sharp single up the middle.
When the center fielder misplayed Simon's hard grounder, Coulson scored and Simon advanced all the way to third. Amburgey walked and with Ashley Windle at the plate, Ada executed a clean double steal. Simon scored easily to put the hosts ahead 5-0.
Windle then struck out but the catcher did not hold onto the ball, and then overthrew the first sacker trying to retire the Ada catcher, allowing Amburgey to score.
Spangler then ripped another RBI single to plate Windle and extend the lead to 7-0.
In the top of the fifth, a Perry one-out pop fly to shallow right-center field dropped in for a hit when Gonzaga and Simon collided.
But Coulson hustled out to the loose ball and threw out the runner trying to stretch it into a double. Tori Wyss then caught a fly ball to left to end the visiting fifth.
Wyss opened the bottom of the fifth by lining a double down the left field line. Guagenti smacked a single to center field that just missed Wyss and scored her to make it 8-0.
After a wild pitch, Coulson then beat out a hard-hit one-hopper to second base. Sumner walked to load the bases.
Mackenzie Wills then grounded a solid single through the hole into left field to drive in Guagenti and build the lead to 9-0. Jessica Hill then pulled a tough grounder down the third base line that caromed off the fielder's glove, sending Coulson home with the 10th and final run that ended the game.
"Just about everybody had a hit, so it is nice to get everyone going a bit," said Jochims. "It is an encouraging start, but we just have to keep getting better. Megan Simon is playing really well."
Simon helped lead the Ada offense with a double, two singles and a pair of RBIs. Left-handed slugging first baseman Spangler doubled, singled hard twice and knocked in two runs.
Hill, Gonzaga, Guagenti and Wills all collected RBI singles. Amburgey singled and Wyss added a double.
The Bulldogs out-hit Perry, 11-3.
