ADA - It was never a contest as the Ada football team throttled local arch-rival Upper Scioto Valley 49-14 in their season-opening grudge match Friday night.
The Bulldogs improved to 1-0 with the lopsided non-league victory, while the Rams start 0-1.
Bulldog freshman Seth Conley threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushed for a score in a very successful varsity debut.
The purple and gold jumped in front quickly, scoring touchdowns on their first five possessions before USV even recorded a first down to decide the outcome early.
Ada took the opening kickoff and quickly covered 65 yards in six plays to reach paydirt. Blake Ansley scampered 15 yards on the first play from scrimmage to set the tone.
Freshman Conley then scurried 37 yards down the right sideline to the Ram 13. Three runs by Ansley covered the final yards, with the hard-nosed junior plunging into the end zone from a yard out just 70 seconds into the fray.
Aaron Everhart's first of seven extra point kicks made it 7-0, Ada.
Ansley quickly made a three-yard tackle for loss on George Bauer to help force a Ram punt. After a high snap, the USV punter tried a pass that fell incomplete to give the hosts the ball at the USV 33 at the 8:34 mark.
Continuing the momentum on the very next play, Ansley tossed a halfback pass which senior Grant McBride snared for a nice 33-yard TD catch with 8:25 left in the opening period. Everhart's PAT boot made the lead 14-0.
USV sophomore Dakota Cornell returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards to the Ada 39. But a two-yard tackle for loss by Noah Beach and a USV penalty helped set up an interception by Nolan Roberts that thwarted the first Ram scoring opportunity at the Ada 27.
On third and five Luke Long-Green took a screen pass, made a nice cut and broke a tackle for a 42-yard gain. Two plays later, Owen Conley hauled in an 18-yard scoring strike from Seth Conley with 6:06 still remaining in the opening stanza.
Everhart's PAT kick capped the 73-yard, six-play march that took only 79 seconds.
The Ada defense forced a quick three-and-out and after a short punt, the Bulldogs took possession at their own 40. Ansley converted third and one with a six-yard run, but Conley was hauled down in the backfield for a six-yard loss by Zack Risner.
On fourth and eight, Conley scrambled 12 yards to the right sideline to keep the chains moving despite absorbing a big hit. Later on fourth and two, Conley rolled right and found Ansley open at the back of the end zone for an 18-yard TD aerial with 11:03 to go in the half.
The point after kick built the lead to 28-0 after the 60-yard, 11-play drive that took 4:29.
Jordan Bailey made a fine tackle for loss of four on the next Ram drive. Senior Levi Bass then picked off a Braden Rostorfer pass at the Ada 42 and returned it 48 yards all the way to the Ram 10.
Conley was dropped for a loss of seven, yet on third and goal from the 17 he hooked up with McBride for a 17-yard TD strike with 10:17 to go before intermission, putting the hosts comfortably ahead 35-0.
Both teams traded punts as USV stopped Ada for the first time. A very short Bulldog boot gave the Rams great field position at the Ada 21.
Three plays later, sophomore Austin Sloan sped up the middle, broke a tackle near the goal line and scored from 17 yards out to give USV its initial first down and points on the same play.
A two-point conversion pass failed and with 5:57 left, Ada led 35-6.
Long-Green responded by carrying several Ram tacklers on a 39-yard kickoff 39 return to the USV 45. A Ram late hit penalty on and a third down sideline tiptoe reception by McBride got Ada to the Ram 15.
The shifty Seth Conley then kept the ball and scampered 15 yards up the middle to paydirt for a 42-6 margin with 4:38 left in the half.
The Bulldogs recovered the ensuing short kickoff when it ricocheted off a Ram, and the pigskin was fallen on by Weston Robinson at midfield. Yet Risner sacked Conley for a loss of 10. On fourth down, Conley scrambled but was hit and fumbled, and freshman Kolton Keith recovered for USV at the Ada 49.
Three Sloan runs gained 17 yards. Rostorfer then rolled right and fired a 32-yard scoring strike to Cornell. A two-point pass by George Bauer to Chase Rose cut the deficit to 42-14 at halftime.
In the third period, Ada drove downfield but was stopped inside the USV one by a fine Ram goal line stand. USV marched methodically downfield but McBride made a fine leaping interception to stop the drive at the Ada 26.
Dylan Hannah made a big 15-yard sack on the next USV possession. On third and 26, Rostorfer scrambled 20 yards before fumbling, yet USV recovered to set up fourth and seven. Rostorfer found Bauer for an eight-yard pass to reach the Ada 24.
Bulldog soph Mason Klingler blew up a screen pass for a loss of four. Rostorfer kept for a gain of four as the scoreless third quarter came to a close. Hannah then knocked down a fourth and 18 pass to stop the Ram drive at the Ada 33.
A third down screen to McBride gained 17 yards to the USV 45. But on fourth and six, Ada came up short on a screen pass.
USV started at its own 31, but Hannah dropped the Rams for a six-yard loss. A long pass was picked off by McBride at the 50 and he returned it six yards to the USV 44.
McBride took a middle screen 32 yards to the Ram nine. Two plays later, McBride made a fine diving grab for a nine-yard TD despite pass interference. The seventh and final Everhart extra point kick made it 49-14 with 6:02 remaining to play.
Freshman Chase Sumner finished up at QB for Ada as the new running clock rule with a 30-point or more deficit took effect.
Keith intercepted a pass to end the last Bulldog possession.
