CANTON - Ada senior Matthew Wilcox finished a strong second amid a 24-man field in the 50 yard freestyle event Thursday evening at the Div. II state swim meet in Canton.
The school-best performance advances him to the A Finals Friday evening at the C. T. Branin Natatorium for a second straight year.
Wilcox posted a time of 21.07 to finish behind only junior Trevor Lake of Bay Village, who came in first in a time of 20.86. Wilcox came up big in the prelim heats by bettering his seed time by .74 in the clutch.
His brother, junior Mitchell Wilcox, came in 11th in the 50 free in 21.95 to make it to the B Finals Friday for those finishing ninth through 16th.
Only the top eight make it to the A Finals. Sam DeNero of Galion took the eighth and final spot in 21.67 to nose out Mitchell by .28.
Senior ace Matthew Wilcox finished fourth last winter in the 50 free and is looking to better that showing in his final state appearance. He will attend Ashland University on a football scholarship next fall.
Mitchell Wilcox also finished 21st out of 24 swimmers in the 100 free (48.87) and did not make it to the A or B Finals on Friday. He missed the second eight, or B Finals qualification, by .47. Lake of Bay Village again had the best preliminary time in the 100 free (46.15).
