COLUMBUS GROVE — Allen East rallied over the final two quarters
Thursday night to defeat Columbus Grove 50-44 in Northwest Conference
The win keeps the Lady Mustangs unbeaten in the NWC at 5-0
and they are 12-5 overall. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-2 in the NWC and
Columbus Grove held the Mustangs to 13 points in the
opening half as they held a 20-13 halftime lead. The Bulldogs outscored
the Mustangs 9-4 in the second quarter for that lead.
struggling on offense in the opening half, the Mustangs came out of the
halftime lockerroom to outscore Grove 22-16 in the third quarter. The Mustangs opened the third quarter with a 14-8 run that had them within 28-27 with 3:40 left in the quarter. The Bulldogs answered back with an 8-3 run before Allen East closed the third quarter with a 5-0 run to trail 36-35 after 24 minutes.
East finished the game with a 15-8 run as they hit several key free
throws down the stretch to ice the game. The Mustangs took the lead for good with a 6-0 run early in the fourth quarter.
After the Bulldogs Julia Wynn scored to give Grove a 38-35 lead the Mustangs went on a 6-0 run as Kaycee Rowe had two straight baskets, the second coming off a steal at midcourt that she took in for a layup. Carly Clum put Allen East 41-38 with a basket with 4:40 left to play. Columbus Grove pulled within 41-40 on a Sammi Stechschulte basket before another Rowe basket and a free throw by Lindsi Woods gave them a 44-40 lead. The Bulldogs never came closer than two points the rest of the way.
“At halftime we talked a lot about offensive movement,” Allen East coach Jarrod Wehri said. “We were kind of stagnate and complacent there at times in the first half, just standing and trying to create one on one opportunities. It's not our style. We got back to playing more our style the second half and it worked well for us.”
The Mustangs played portions of the first half without Rowe and Aubri Woods because of foul trouble.
Rowe led the
Mustangs with 17 points, 13 in the second half, and London Richardson
hit three three-pointers to finish the night with 11 points. Carly Clum
had 10 points for Allen East, who will play Crestview next Thursday in a
battle of NWC unbeatens. The Knights remained unbeaten in the NWC with a win over Spencerville Thursday evening
Lynea Diller came off the bench to lead
the Bulldogs with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sammi Stechschulte hit
three three-pointers for the Bulldogs as she had 11 points and grabbed
nine rebounds. The Bulldogs had a 27-16 rebounding edge in the game.
Columbus Grove won the junior varsity game 49-14.
