ADA - Visiting Spencerville broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the third and went on to post a 7-2 Northwest Conference baseball win over Ada Monday evening.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-14 overall and 0-8 in the NWC, while the Bearcats improved to 4-10 and 2-4 in league play with the victory.
Spencerville broke on top in the third 1-0, then put runners on second and third. A passed ball pushed another run across, and a grounder through the shortstop's legs made it 3-0. Ada got out of the jam with an 8-6-3 double play off a fly ball to center.
The Bulldogs threatened to score in the third when Cory Kellum pulled a solid leadoff double down the line in left field. He advanced to third on a groundout to second base off the bat of Brayden Sautter.
But then Bearcat southpaw Joel Shimp reared back and struck out the next two batters to retire the side and strand Kellum at third.
In the fourth, the Bearcats tacked on a single run. Spencerville scored three more times in the top of the fifth. Bulldog catcher Hunter Waller ended the inning by throwing out a would-be base stealer.
In the sixth, Ada threatened when Mason Acheson walked and Austin Cobb reached on an error. But Brenden Szippl's fly out to center turned into a twin killing when Acheson was doubled off second. Another fly out ended the threat.
In the top of the seventh Lane Nitchie relieved and pitched a scoreless inning for Ada.
In the home half of the seventh, the Bulldogs scored twice. After a one-out walk to Dakota Frazier, freshman Blake Willeke smacked a double down the left field line.
The Bearcat reliever balked in a run, then Gabe Sutton singled to center to score Willeke and make it 7-2. But a groundout to third base ended the rally and the game.
Bearcat starter Shimp tossed five shutout innings, striking out seven with no walks to earn the win. He scattered six Ada hits.
Kellum doubled in the third and singled in the fifth to pace the Bulldog offense. The Bearcats out-hit Ada, 10-8.

Ada, which has lost 13 in a row after a 2-1 start, looks to get back on the winning track when they host Ft. Jennings Wednesday in a non-league bout Wednesday. They then visit Delphos Jefferson (13-8, 2-5 NWC) in the league season finale.
