ADA - Ada built a 7-1 lead and staved off a Cory-Rawson rally to post a 9-7 non-conference baseball win at home Thursday evening.

The victory improved the Bulldog mark to 2-1. Poised senior right-hander Austin Cobb went the distance, striking out a career-high 13 batters and scattering eight hits while tossing 93 pitches to record his second victory in as many decisions.

"It was another solid outing by Austin, he was in command and hit his spots," said Ada head coach Jason Campbell. "It was what we've come to expect from a senior pitcher.

"We played good team baseball; bunting, moving runners over. Lane Nitchie and Brayden Sautter both laid down great sacrifice bunts. We jumped out to a big lead and then got a big insurance run in the sixth."

Connor English drilled an RBI single to center and another run scored on an error by the center fielder to put the Bulldogs up in the fourth, 7-1. Cobb was hit by a pitch but Cory wriggled out of further damage on a strikeout looking and a groundout.

C-R started to creep back in it on a pair of walks and a two-run single in the top of the fifth. Ada catcher Hunter Waller was shook up on a collision at home plate and was replaced by Nitchie.

In the top of the sixth, Cory loaded the bases after a two-out error on a grounder to shortstop. The Hornets then sliced a double to deep right field that scored all three runners, cutting the deficit to 8-7.

Cobb then bore down to strike out the next batter and strand the tying run at second base.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ada plated a key insurance run. English stroked a single to left-center and stole second, followed by a Cobb walk. English later came in to score on a balk. But Cobb was called out at home on a close play trying to score on a grounder to shortstop.

In the top of the seventh, Bulldog second sacker Cory Kellum back-handed a line drive to open the inning. Cobb struck out the next Hornet, then surrendered a single to right just past Kellum to bring the tying run to the plate.

But Cobb reared back and struck the final batter out looking to end the game. "Cobb slammed the door shut to put an exclamation point on the win," said Campbell.

"I am very excited for the guys to be 2-1," he continued. "We've put in long hours of work and it is exciting to see them get the fruits of their labors."

English batted 4-4 with three singles, a double and three runs batted in to pace the 11-hit Bulldog offense. He doubled in the fourth and singled in the first, third and sixth innings. Mason Acheson added a two-run double.

"Tonight we had good weather, a good crowd with the chants, it was fun baseball like it is supposed to be," added Campbell. "We had a very good team offensive output."

Ada scored one or two runs in all six of their at bats.
