MIDDLE POINT — Ada head coach Bill Taflinger was pleased with his team’s offense on Thursday night during the Lady Bulldogs’ game at Lincolnview.

A solid shooting day wasn’t enough, however, as the Bulldogs were dominated on the glass and dropped their regular-season finale 56-52. The Lady Lancers (12-10, 4-4 Northwest Conference) outrebounded Ada 34-22 for the game, but it was a string of three straight offensive rebounds - each coming off a missed free throw - late that sealed the fate of the Bulldogs.

“(Rebounding) is what it all comes down to,” said Taflinger, “it has pretty much been the story of our season.”

Ada closes the regular season at 6-15 and 1-7 in league play.

“When you’ve played this many games, it is pretty obvious what are weakness is, and it just bit us again, especially late in the game. Even throughout the game, there were a couple of times where we had leads and we’d give up a cheap offensive rebound…”

The Bulldogs stayed in the game thanks to a 9-for-22 shooting effort from 3-point range, including seven of those makes in the first half. Haley Wyss led all scorers with 24 points, connecting on 7 of her 14 field goal attempts, incouding 5 of 9 3-pointers.

Ada has now dropped six straight and eight of their last nine games.

“Tonight was the best we have played in a long time,” Taflinger said. “There is no question about it. We had more girls attacking, which led to (the Lancers) having to help and we were able to pass the ball out. Haley shot it well, obviously, but Maddie (Gossard) is a a much better shooter and has been hot lately, and Teara Coulson didn’t make them tonight, either. Haley made shots, and Alyssa Gore made two (threes) early, but we didn’t have the consistency as a team, which hurt. But offensively, I was happy with what our girls did; this was the best we have played in a long time.”

Ada looked quite comfortable at the Barnyard in the first half, conning on each of its first four from beyond the arc. A Wyss trey gave the Bulldogs a 12-11 lead in the first period, but Lincolnview closed on a 6-0 spurt, including a put-back bucket by junior Kayala Schimmoeller, to end the quarter and take a 17-11 lead after eight minutes.

The Lancers extended their lead to eight early in the second when Alena Looser drilled a trey and Maddie Gorman scored on a fastbreak, and it was pushed to nine when Olivia Gorman connected on a triple moments later. Ada, then, took the opportunity to put together a run of its own, as Wyss and Vore hit on back-to-back treys to close an 8-0 run. Minutes later, a tree from Gossard put Ada in front 29-28. Lincolnview senior Katlyn Wendel closed the half with a 3-point play off an offensive rebound to give her club a skinny 32-30 halftime edge.

Ada took the lead twice in the third quarter and had the game tied at 40-40 when Wyss knocked down a 28-foot 3-pointer with 3:33 left in the quarter. Thanks to second and third opportunities, however, Lincolnview closed the period on a 7-0 run, and extended that to 9-0 when Frankie Carey connected on a pair of free throws to start the fourth.

From that point, however, Ada began to chip away, thanks mostly to some frigid (0-for-7) shooting by the Lancers. Ada had closed to within 49-47 with 2:07 to play, but the Lancers, particularly Schimmoeller, flexed their rebounding muscles again. Schimmoeller grabbed an offensive board and broke the Lancer scoring drought with 1:34 left, then came up with a steal at the other end and scored on a breakaway for a 53-47 scoreboard.

Though Lincolnview left the door open by missing 7 of 8 free throws in the game’s final 32 seconds, three offensive boards by the Lancers sealed the game.

Ada takes on county rival Hardin Northern in a sectional game at Bath on Tuesday evening. The Lancers open tournament play the following night at Allen East against New Knoxville.
