BLUFFTON -- This is going to be BIG!

Bluffton’s iconic “Blaze of Lights” extravaganza is slated for Saturday, November 26. And the theme this season, according to the Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, is: “Candyland Christmas.”

Expect to see, oh, a few big candy canes.

This past Saturday, Bluffton volunteers (aka: electronic elves) strung some, count ‘em, 10,000 lights around the huge pine trees on the village green in the heart of downtown.

And as there are 10,000 lights, the village, as in years past, expects upward of 10,000 people, from all over the state, to attend.

Caroling begins at 4 p.m. that day.

At 5 p.m., there will be a rather lengthy parade through downtown, featuring every kind of ‘festive float’ imaginable, and more candy coming off those parade vehicles than you can, well, shake a candy cane at.

After the parade, there will be a “Town Crier,” (Top hat, black suit, the whole thing.) who will read the Bible’s “Christmas Story.”

In addition, there will be live music throughout the rest of the night. This will also include a performance by the Bluffton High School Show Choir, which does, perhaps, the best musical rendition of “The Grinch,” of any high school Show Choir in the country!

That is, if any other high school Show Choir(s) actually do “The Grinch.” But anyway…

At 7 p.m., there will be the Ceremonial Lighting, with some type of prominent village “switch hitter” (whose name has not been divulged yet) flipping the lights switch. In fact, there’s usually such a power surge, rolling blackouts have been reported in nearby Jenera periodically.

Santa and Mrs. Clause will take up residence this night in Bluffton’s Senior Center for kids’ Christmas lists and parents’ photo ops. Hot chocolate, coffee, and homemade pie is always available at the Center as well during this.

There will also be Holiday Lights Tours through the village. Bluffton is one of 43 towns in the state that is featured on the well-known “Ohio Holiday Lights Tour.”

And if all that isn’t enough, there will be store vendors on the sidewalks, up and down Main Street, offering store items and food. You haven’t lived until you’ve had some of Shirley’s Gourmet “Christmas Season Popcorn.”

Think: red and green popcorn.
