ADA — “Buckeye Bob.”

If there is a bigger Ohio State University fan in the village of Ada, or Hardin County, or Ohio at large, or, well, the Milky Way Galaxy at large, I’d be hard pressed to know who.

I first noticed it at the Ada Village Council Meetings. While other council members had, like, non-distinct (but don’t get me wrong, sort of nice) polo shirts, sweaters, watches, eye glasses… Bob had on, like, an Ohio State shirt, an Ohio State watch, Ohio State eye-glass frames… He would also regularly use an Ohio State pen…

Translated: He was accessorized ‘to the nines’ with Buckeye stuff! (For you Gen-Xers, Google the phraseology: ‘to the nines’.)

Why the tremendous affinity for, even addiction to, OSU (rhymes)?

Bob graduated from the school in 1973. And apparently it was QUITE a good experience for him. And ever since, he’s been “giving back” to the university.

Exhibit A: This is his 21st year as the president of the “OSU Alumni Club of Hardin County.” No term limits for him, he enjoys it too much.

Bob’s house in Ada could double as a regional OSU Museum.

When they redid some of the outside of OSU Stadium (aka: “The Shoe”), alumni paid a pretty penny, not to mention some serious cash, for the bricks in the walkway around the stadium.

Bob’s wife got him, not a lump of coal for Christmas, but one of those bricks. It was one from right outside “Gate 7.”

Bob had it inscribed:

“No matter where I roam,

“My OSU spirit,

“Is inscribed forever,

“In stone.”

Buckeye rhyming haiku. Who would have thought?

Bob and his wife have season tickets to the OSU football games and OSU Women’s Basketball Games. He particularly loves Buckeye football.

His favorite football memory?

The year he was a senior at OSU, the University of Michigan was ranked #1 in the country. And came into “The Shoe” undefeated for the final regular season game.

Exactly 60 minutes later (minus time outs, half time, penalties…), including two UNBELIEVABLE Ohio State goal line stands, OSU came out on top 14 to 11! The fans went nuts — Buckeyes/nuts, get it? — and Ohio State, not Michigan, was on their way to the Rose Bowl.

Bob has been to a few Rose Bowls, Orange Bowls, Sugar Bowls, Cumquat Bowls (okay, I just made that last one up, it was just that I was on a ‘bowl roll,’ hmm, rhymes yet again) over the years. And when Bob isn’t jetting about, and such, he can be found, regularly, at the St. Johns Church Social Hall in Kenton for one of the Hardin County OSU Alumni Club meetings.

The group, some 100 members strong, has banquets, does “Game Watch” parties, brings in famous OSU speakers like Jerry Lucas, Archie Griffin…, and it even has a book club — where they read about Woody Hayes, or Jim Tressel, or…

And when the group is not doing all this, they’re raising scholarship money for students from Hardin County who want to go to OSU.

Their motto for this involves yet another rhyme: “Don’t be blue, go to OSU.”

Okay, I’m making that up too. But I was struggling to think of a good ending.

GO BUCKEYES!

Note: That “Don’t be ‘blue’” thing is also a subliminal message about, that’s right, Michigan. LOL, sort of.

OVERSET FOLLOWS:GO WOLVERINES! Not.
