ADA — For three years, Ada High School students have inched closer to taking home a cup at MakerFest. This year, they reached their goal, earning the MakerFest cup in the S.T.E.M. challenge. Thirty-six students in 12 teams of three took home four gold, four silver and four bronze awards, in the process earning 69,000 points; more than enough to leap past second-place Van Wert High School and take home the cup.

MakerFest is a two day event held every year at Apollo Career Center and the Veterans Memorial Civic and Career Center in Lima. This year’s competition was held Oct. 18 and 19. The Thursday event at Apollo was a competition between those in the skilled trades (e.g. carpentry, welding) and was won for the fourth year in a row by Apollo Career Center.

The Friday competition consists of seventeen STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) challenges pitting students from 30 schools against each other.

“Pride, I’m feeling pride in my kids,” AHS Science Teacher Dave Lusk said. “They did a great job and I can’t tell you what this means to this school and these kids and I’m just so proud of them and what they’ve done.”
